October 17, 2015. Providence, RI. Media Smart Libraries partook in the excitement of digital learning at the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE) Innovation Powered by Technology Conference. The annual conference--attended by educators, administrators, and librarians--is an opportunity to network and explore the intersections of education and technology. Media Smart Libraries took this occasion to spread the word about our professional development workshops, goals, partnerships, and library leader cohort program.
Alyssa Taft and Allison Barker, Media Smart Libraries staff members, also helped facilitate a Birds of a Feather breakout session on Professional Learning. Conference attendees shared in a round-table discussion concerning professional development, technology integration in the classroom, and barriers to success. Project-based learning, one-to-one device initiatives, time management, and administrative support were topics that came to light during the open forum.
As attendees visited the Media Smart Libraries booth, they received materials from the program’s partners, the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) and the Providence Children’s Film Festival (PCFF). While educators had some familiarity with these organizations, Media Smart Libraries advocated for the roles of OLIS and PCFF as they relate to education and curriculum in our digital world. Educators were also encouraged to bring information about Media Smart Libraries and our upcoming workshops back to their school librarians and administrators.
The RIDE conference was well attended and the interaction between Media Smart Libraries and educators, administrators, librarians, and cohort members was a fun and productive experience for all.
