September 26, 2016. Warwick, Rhode Island.
Media Smart Libraries was excited to partner with the Office of Library and Information Services for their annual Youth Services meeting. Youth librarians from both school and public libraries gathered at the Warwick Public Library for a day-long workshop with Media Literacy expert, Faith Rogow.
The workshop covered a range of topics pertaining to Media Literacy, from setting goals, to asking the right questions, to scaling the lessons and activities for different age groups. Rogow challenged librarians to see themselves as “Chief Inquiry Officers” and to help students develop strong habits of inquiry. The workshop included opportunities for librarians to collaborate and brainstorm together, creating personal connections and building upon the already strong foundation of Rhode Island’s youth services library community.
Rogow also facilitated a shorter evening session on September 27th titled Media Literacy Without Judgment. This was held at the Cranston Public Library and while it covered similar material as her day-long workshop, this session focused more on media literacy with teens. This intimate workshop allowed for the participants to ask specific questions and discuss as a group how to implement Media Literacy education in their libraries.
