Media Smart Librarians Share Their Experiences and Ideas

October 4, 2016. North Kingstown, RI.

Media Smart Libraries hosted an IdeaFest at the North Kingstown Free Library where practicing librarians and library students could come to hear about the Media Smart Libraries grant and how Media Smart Librarians are implementing digital and media literacy programming in their libraries.

The panel was moderated by Catherine Damiani, Emerging Technologies Librarian at the East Providence Public Library, and consisted of Kristin Almeida, School Librarian, Westerly Middle School; Suzanne Costa, School Librarian, Barrington High School, Lee-Ann Galli, Reference and Technology Librarian, Narragansett Public Library; Suzanne Jordan, School Librarian, Francis Elementary School, East Providence, and Susan Murphy, School Librarian, Feinstein Middle School, Coventry.

The panelists each gave a brief introduction of what they have implemented in their library and the programs included digital citizenship, visual literacy, stop motion animation, professional development for teachers, and independent film discussion. Each panelist wove in their experiences with the Media Smart Libraries program to demonstrate how meaningful professional development can impact practice.

Following the panel, participants were invited to break out into groups to further discuss topics they were interested in, and the room naturally divided itself into a Digital Citizenship group, a Makerspace group, and a Film Programming group. This time allowed for participants to network and ask specific questions.

Media Smart Libraries is so thankful to our panelists and excited to showcase the work that came out of the first year of the grant.
